Understanding the World through Philosophy and Theology
This term, Year 9 Theologians have been reading theology in the media. The scheme of work builds towards their final assessed essay topic: "To what extent does religion benefit society?".
Content covered started with a study of the Sikh tradition of the Khalsa alongside Guru Nanak's teachings on interfaith dialogue. This was brought into modern society as we explored the misconceptions associated with the kirpan in modern society.
We are now evaluating the function of prayer, reflecting upon Soren Kierkgaard's claim that "The purpose of prayer is not to influence God but change the nature of the one who prays". This is reviewed in context of prayer conducted in sports media, for example the "Pray for Muamba" campaign and the rakahs performed by Mohamed Salah.
Following this, Peckham's philosophers will study eschatology in light of Queen Elizabeth's funeral and social justice in context of Martin Luther King's letter from Birmingham jail and the persecution of Uighur Muslims in China.
To encourage your child to excel in this subject, encourage them to discuss theological and philosophical issues from the news at home. Some examples of student work can be found on this page.
