LIPPY theatre
On Wednesday 11th March a group of students went to see LIPPY at the Young Vic Theatre in Waterloo.
Lippy by Bush Moukarzel was an extraordinary piece of theatre based on a true story of death and loss based in a tiny Irish town. The play depicted a world of chaos and beauty in the lives of four women who decided the world they lived in was cruel and unforgiving.
The play was strange and dark and explored what we say and hear and how they can be misinterpreted by those around us. Told through the eyes of a police lip reader the play draws on Artaud’s theatre of cruelty and elements of comedy as well as tragedy.
Quotes from students:
“It was very Artaud, as it made the audience feel uncomfortable.” Shavarne - Year 12
“It was the best play I have ever seen. “ Jessica Year 10
“It was weird, strange and disgusting at times. Very much Artaud’s methods of using all the senses to pull the audience in.”- Jason Year 13.
The Academy has a long running relationship with the Young Vic theatre as we have taken part in many educational performances and workshops run by the company and have taken advantage of their funded ticket scheme allowing us to see great theatre performances for free. As a result of this the education manager gave us a variety of free play texts to support learning at key stage 5 as well as introduce students to a wider range of theatre genres.
“We would like to thank Daniel and Georgia from the Young Vic for the opportunity to see a range of world class theatre exploring a diverse range of styles and genres. Without this programme many of our students would not get access to exceptional theatre that has transformed their views and inspired their practice.”
