Imperial College Chemistry visit
On Wednesday 18 November 8 Year 13 Chemistry students went to Imperial College London.
Our morning session required the students to complete an experiment carrying out the Wittig reaction. The students successfully completed their practical and enjoyed using some pieces of equipment that they had never seen before, including magnetic stirrer bars and Buchner funnels.
During the afternoon session the students then analysed the products that they had made using a combination of Thin Layer Chromatography, Infra Red Spectroscopy and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy to discover whether they had made the correct product. They had!
The day was very interesting and informative and the content covered was very relevant for the A2 Chemistry course.
