Yr 8 King's Scholars had an exciting workshop day! They practiced suturing bananas and designed 3D containers to protect eggs in an engineering workshop. National Science Week

National Science Week is designed to engage and inspire people of all ages with Science, Engineering and Technology.  At Harris Academy Peckham we had organised a vast array of activities so we extended Science Week over a 3 week period.  The activities on offer for our students were:

7 metre diameter Star Dome Planetarium – where students could learn about our solar system if they were KS3 or the life history of a star if they were KS4+5 (quotes from students below).

  • “It was a very interesting experience and it inspired me to look further into stars” – Levi Year 10
  •  “The planetarium was amazing! It was superb how it was set up in our main hall.  Once we were inside, it looked fantastic.  It not only look good it was extremely educational” – Otis Year 10
  •  “The planetarium was great, it was fun and intriguing to learn the life history of a star.  It was a way to twist learning interactive and fun.  We should do it more often” – Arif Year 10
  • “The star dome was extremely fascinating.  A 3D experience of our solar system viewed in many perspectives which I’d never seen before.  From the Arizona asteroid to the formation of the Sun.  A must see” – Sahed Year 10
  • “The dome was very interesting and helped me learn so much about our solar system.  It answered so many unanswered questions I had” – Tobi Year 12
  • “A new experience, something fun and educational likewise” – Anoir Year 12
  • “It was very Educational, I didn’t know the rings of Saturn were made from tiny particles of ice” - Roqeebat Year 8
  • “I attend Astronomy club every week.  I found the presentation very interesting and helped me put everything into perspective” - Cameron Year 9
  • “It was brilliant, I was really excited to be going into the planetarium dome. It was very realistic, like I was in space” - Dircia Year 8

  • “I didn’t know what to expect before I went into the Dome, it was breath taking” - Jaydon Year 9


Animal show – where students got to learn about adaptations of a fantastic selection of snakes (one is about 5 meters long), 2 different lizards, a pair of meerkats and a tarantula.

  • “It was a great experience for me.  I really enjoyed it and especially touching the Meerkat.  It was amazing ” – Moshin Year 9
  • “I thought the whole experience was phenomenal.  I especially liked touching the huge snake. ” – Marvellous Year 9
  • “I really enjoyed the session. It would be nice if we could do something like that again ” – Kim Year 9
  • “I strongly think that the animal experience is indeed a great experience as we got to learn about how animals were adapted to live.  The best bits was the touching of the animals.  It was beautiful, wonderful and a great educational experience.  Thank you very much. ” – Joseph Year 9
  • “This experience was amazing.  I liked everything, but I especially liked the snakes. ” – Kevin Year 9
  • “I really liked learning about the animals.  Thank you for letting us have this moment.  The best part was touching the animals.  ” – Deborah Year 9


KS3 Science Challenge – 4 after school sessions were run where KS3 students were given a variety of experiments and challenges they had to try and accomplish; such as who could make a spaghetti tower, balancing nail and bath bombs . 

Famous British Discoveries – KS3 students learnt about historic and recent inventions that effect their lives today 

CSI lessons – KS3 classes were given a crime scene investigation of a murder scene.  Students had to collect 5 different pieces of evidence to eliminate suspects.

Tutor group quiz – general knowledge science questions

Science Trail – KS3 treasure hunt around the school where the questions were all science related.
