Helen Hayes MP Meets Our Student Council
Helen Hayes MP discusses topics such as homelessness and Universal Credit with our Student Council, reports Autumn, Year 9.
It was a great opportunity for our Academy to be visited by Helen Hayes the MP for both Dulwich and West Norwood.
Even though Harriet Harman is MP for Camberwell and Peckham, it was lovely to receive a visit and meeting from Ms Hayes as she is a neighboring MP near our local area.
Some subjects that we talked about with Ms Hayes are how she intends to deal with the increase of homelessness and the significant problem with Universal Credit and how it is substantially used for the public and those who cannot fully look after themselves.
Universal Credit is a United Kingdom social security payment that was designed to simplify the benefits system and to incentivise paid work. To have an MP’s point of view on the subject really cleared it up for young people such as myself.
Ms Hayes worked as a town planner. She became managing partner of her own town planning company, Urban Practitioners, before becoming a partner at a London architectural practice. She is a huge inspiration to young women of society today, as is Harriet Harman. Having Ms Hayes visit our Academy is an amazing feeling as it creates an inspirational atmosphere.
On behalf of the Student Council Deputy and Principal, we thank Ms Hickey, Ms Hayes and Mr Lane for this amazing opportunity to meet a neighbouring MP. Hopefully we will continue to have regular meetings with our local MPs!
