Giant Peckham Plait Celebrates Diversity
Students come together to make a giant colourful, fabric plait for All Saints Church, Peckham – to celebrate diversity.
For their Art and RE Depth and Discovery Day, Year 9 students visited All Saints Church in Peckham to discover the ways in which the church supports the community. To show their gratitude to the church, the students then spent the rest of their day creating an art installation in the form of a giant plait.
The process of making the plait created a sense of community and collaboration amongst Year 9, who sang and danced as they wove together colourful fabrics representing diversity.
When the art installation was complete, the 90 students and staff contributors walked the plait through Peckham (pictured) to deliver it to All Saints church. Market stall holders and passers-by looked perplexed and stopped to watch, smile and say hello.
When we arrived at the church carrying the plait the staff were overwhelmed and even more so when the installation was in place. It was a lovely reminder of community, vibrancy, fun and diversity.
