Black Heroes Foundation
On Friday 21st June Year 9 GCSE Drama students worked with the Black Heroes Foundation who have made a film about Sam King, a Jamaican immigrant who co-founded the Notting Hill Carnival and became the first black mayor of Southwark. Sam King MBE sailed to the UK on the Empire Windrush in 1948 and was elected as Mayor of Southwark in 1983.
Students had the opportunity to watch the film and then take part in a workshop inspired by the themes of the film. The aim of the workshop was for students to explore personal and shared heroes and to examine what they would change or improve if they were mayor for a day. Students worked hard and created some inspirational and insightful work on how they would improve our city. So much so that our students have been asked to participate in future projects. Well done Year 9!
