Battlefields visit
On Friday 23rd June, 28 Year 9 students set off on the History Department’s annual visit to the WW1 Battlefields of Belgium. The purpose of the visit was for students to consolidate their investigations on the topic of trench warfare on the Western Front, pay their respects to the fallen soldiers of Peckham and Camberwell, and see with their own eyes some of the historical sites of the battles that were fought on the Ypres Salient between 1914 and 1918.
Students visited war cemeteries, walked through a series of restored trench systems, and used historical artefacts to investigate the impact of trench warfare on those who fought. Liam in Year 9 even had the chance to try on a British soldier’s full pack, and uniform!
