Build a Bike scheme
Once a week, until the end of February, Build a Bike project are working with students at Harris Academy Peckham, providing the opportunity for them to learn the skills to re- build and restore old bikes that have been discarded and scrapped.
The aim of the project is to provide students with the knowledge and understanding of the mechanical workings of a bike, and the awareness of how to maintain a bike, and how to use it safely.
KS3 students were engrossed within five minutes as they were each given grimy and mud-encrusted frames to wash and polish. That was the first step. What emerged were sparkling, gleaming bright bicycle frames, ready to be transformed in the forthcoming weeks.
Next was the task of replacing wheels and tyres, something that required a bit more skill and patience.
Already it is clear that the students are enjoying the experience, and rising to the challenge. What’s more, at the end of the project the students get to take the bikes home to keep.
