Guinness Book of World Records Attempt
On Friday 24th June 120 Year 9 pupils took part in a world record reading lesson attempt on, joining around 75 other schools in a bid to smash the previous record of 3,509 pupils simultaneously participating in the same reading lesson. Coordinated by the National Book Day Trust, the Harris students, along with thousands of others around the country, read and discussed the first chapter of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Independent observers were on hand to verify this scholarly feat for Guinness World Records, making an official tally of the number of pupils involved in each class and ensuring that the muggles had not taken assistance from illicit charms or spells in their record bid. They noted in their report to Guinness World Records an “impressive focus from all pupils on the text”, “sensitive awareness of the many language devices used by Rowling” and “clear demonstration of how books can have a magical effect on readers’ imaginations”.
