UCAS Event, Excel Centre
The UCAS event aimed solely at Performing Arts students allowed sixth formers to gain an insight into the range of creative courses available in the London area and further afield as well as meet and talk to current students and tutors.
The day held at the Excel centre in East London was a wealth of information that highlighted a range of creative pathways and showcased a range of student work for participants to engage and interact with.
Throughout the event there where live bands, interactive dance workshops as well as a silent disco to allow the students to see the quality of work produced and look at the ways courses are run and collaborate with each other. Our students got to speak to a variety of tutors and ask a range of questions specific to their needs and interests. From Film courses with acting, to work placements aboard, many universities offered some exciting and dynamic courses that sparked their passion for the arts and opened up their eyes to the hard decisions they will have to make in the near future.
“The day was interesting and knowledgeable. It helped me see that I could combine my love of the arts with psychology or even teaching.” Sachelle Year 13
As part of their current BTEC level 3 course the students have to learn about practical business elements of the industry and this includes how to apply to university and gain a foothold in the professional world of the arts. This includes students writing personal statements and compiling professional CVs to apply for jobs. This day helped them see how what they are doing in lessons applies in a real world context and what pathways into the industry are out there.
The day blended performances and discussions with first hand advice in living in halls of residence as well as videos of past productions and advice on careers in the arts sector. With a range of universities represented the students enjoyed the day and are now inspired to write the best personal statement they can to make sure they get their place at the University they want.
