Educational Visit to the British Library: Magna Carta: Law, Liberty, Legacy
On Tuesday 28th April 20 of our students visited the British Library. Our visit was a great opportunity to learn more about the value of manuscripts, books, diaries, maps and all the other ways we try to capture information to keep and share. The concentrated atmosphere was inspiring and students asked a lot of questions how to retrieve a book, which areas the collection covers and why the building looks like the Titanic.
We also had the possibility to see original manuscripts of the Magna Carta and learned how it has inspired some of today’s fundamental liberties. Since 1215 the Magna Carta has evolved from a political agreement to an international symbol of freedom. We took this as a starting point to discuss human rights and the advantages of democratic values.
