Magic Monday for students and staff at Harris Academy Peckham!
Monday 3rd December will always be known as magic Monday to students and staff at Harris Academy Peckham. It was truly an inspirational day with different students across the year groups having the opportunity to meet amazing world famous role models. First of all, Archie Sharp came to put the Year 10 boxing students through their paces by delivering an elite two hour boxing session. He is currently the European Featherweight Boxing Champion and is currently ranked 13 in the world. The students were also able to ask him questions about how to reach the top of your game and it has truly given them the belief that they can do it! He was very impressed with the lads talent and determination from all of the students in in the session.
Then Rio Ferdinand arrived during a Years 7-11 mixed football tournament to speak to the students for part of a documentary he is currently filming about his life growing up in Peckham. The students could not contain their excitement with having an ex England Captain watching them play football and they loved being interviewed by him. Rio spoke to the students, staff and parents about the importance of being fit and healthy. What an epic experience for our Academy community!
Finally a group of Year ten and eleven students were given free tickets to go to the Southbank Centre to see Michelle Obama talk about her personal journey to becoming First Lady and her time in the White House. The lawyer and wife of former president Barack Obama will spoke about her memoir Becoming.
“I hope that this book might help each of you embrace the beauty of who you are, and I wish you all the best in your own process of becoming.” Michelle Obama. She spoke alongside Nigerian novelist, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, whose work has examined post-colonialism and feminism. It was an experience the students will carry with them for the rest of their lives!
Wow what a magic Monday for our amazing students! We hope it empowers them to truly believe in what they can achieve in life! This is their becoming!!!
