Health and Social Care trip to Guy and St Thomas' Hospital
On Thursday 10th December the Year 12 and year 13 Health and Social Care students went on a trip to St Thomas’ Hospital as part of the Hands Up for Health program. This trip gave our Year 12 and 13 students an excellent chance to gain experience of working in a hospital. Students undertook a variety of health care roles from paramedics, nurses, nursing assistants, surgeons and senior doctors in a range of hospital care scenarios. Our students were able to use real hospital equipment and learnt nursing skills such as:
- reading vital signs of patients;
- measuring and recording breathing rate, heart rate, temperature and blood pressure;
- stitching wounds;
- Doctor-patient consultation and communication skills;
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR);
- Inserting a drip and taking blood;
This was an amazing opportunity for our students to put theory into practice and gain a proper insight into the kinds of jobs and tasks of health care professionals. This trip has motivated many of our students to seriously consider medicine degrees in further education and gives them a focus and goal to work towards during their studies.
